Bicycle Safety Coordinator, Injury Free Coalition for Kids of
Andrew Wilson works with Wilmington, CA youth through his Bicycle Safety Club at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Wilmington.
Regarding his role as bicycle safety coordinator, Andrew says, “The main goal of the club is to teach safe riding techniques and introduce the importance of exercise to children. For instance, wearing a helmet. I cannot stress wearing helmets enough; a helmet can make the difference between a minor spill and a major accident resulting in a trip to the hospital. A helmet is useless if not worn properly, so part of the curriculum for the club is learning how to wear a helmet correctly. Ultimately, I want the children to have fun being safe, and to take techniques learned from the activities with them for the rest of their lives.”
Andrew has been racing bicycles for six years and is a fully licensed cycling coach. He is also attending California State University in Long Beach. He plans on becoming a high school teacher after he graduates.
