Welcome to the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Phoenix at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center!
St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC) treats over 1,000 injured children in its Emergency Department each year. Understanding the significant impact injuries have not only on inflicted individuals, but also on the families and community in general, SJHMC has a long-standing commitment to injury prevention and has been actively involved in injury prevention activities for over 20 years.
Within SJHMC, The Children’s Health Center, Trauma Administration, Clinical Education, and Barrow Neurological Institute Community Education have joined forces to deepen the commitment to prevention and reduce injuries in children 0-14 years of age by serving as an Injury Free Coalition for Kids site.
The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Phoenix at SJHMC provides a catalyst for improved coordination and evaluation of a variety of injury prevention projects with a focus on a 10 square mile area in Central Phoenix. This area is home to over 10,000 children under the age of 15.
Through our Barrow Neurological Institute – Community Education, Outreach and Prevention Programs we support ThinkFirst, Helmet Your Head, and Oliver Otter (You Otter be Water Wise). Our Center for Education and Development sponsors Children are Priceless Passengers and the Car Seat Program. Trauma Administration supports the SMARTR Youth Violence Prevention Program,Boot Camp for New Dads, Trauma Center Wake Up! Youth Program and provides injury prevention education to community organizations. In addition the Trauma Administration Epidemiologist provides technical assistance in the areas of grant writing, evaluation, data collection and analysis to internal programs and externally to organizations and programs within the community, county and state.
The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Phoenix is also committed to the development of the infrastructure necessary for long-term support of a local injury surveillance system.
The true strength of the Injury Free model lies in the commitment of the community. Phoenix coalition participants include the Phoenix Police and Fire Departments, local school districts, SAFE KIDS, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, the Maricopa Association of Governments as well as parents and other concerned community members.
