On October 9, 2002 volunteers from Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Kansas City at Truman Medical Center, KaBoom, Kauffman Foundation, Harris Youth Foundation, Kansas City Parks and Recreation, Ivanhoe Neighborhood and CNA Insurance joined together to build a playground at Ivanhoe Park. The park is located at 43rd and Brooklyn. The day started at 9:00 with volunteers unloading playground pieces and cement. Throughout the day the equipment was put together and installed until the playgrund was completely finished. Volunteers mixed cement in wheelbarrows to pour around the playground equipment fittings. Other projects that volunteers kept busy with included: painting the baseball diamond fences and benches, painting court lines and the Ivanhoe Nieghborhood logo on the basketball court. Ivanhoe Nieghborhood Assoication provided food for the volunteers, including breakfast and lunch. The First Aide Station was staffed by Truman Medical Center Trauma Services and MAST ambulance was onsite. Media coverage included: Fox 4, Channel 41 (NBC), Channel 9 (ABC), The Kansas City Star newspaper and The Globe newspaper. The day concluded with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:00. Representatives were present from the Kansas City Mayor's office, as well as State and National Congressperson's offices. Proclamations were received from Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department
