BorderRAC will host the lighting of the star in green on National Injury Prevention Day in honor of Estell Lenita Johnson. El Paso's Star on the Mountain is an 84 year-old landmark on the Franklin Mountains. It is 459 feet tall and 278 feet wide and made up of 459 bulbs. The star is visible 100 miles from the air and 35 miles away from the ground and can be seen in the United States (Texas and New Mexico) as well as in Mexico. The estimated 2024 population in El Paso is 996,000 and 1.6 million in Juarez Mexico.
BorderRAC consists of 12 employees and has collaborated with the El Paso Chamber of Commerce and El Paso Electric Company to raise awareness of this community outreach effort to prevent injuries and violence. The star will be lit in green from 5 pm to 6 am on November 18th.
Post NIPD event - 8 employees were involved, thousands of community residents were able to see and read the reason for the lighting of the Star for 12 hours. Our three social media platforms were utilized during NIPD. BorderRAC participated in the X (formerly Twitter) chat. BorderRAC also set up two additional sites for shining the green light which included the El Paso Regional Communications Center and Fire Station 5 with 8 additional volunteers. BorderRAC purchased and distributed lights to these sites. In support of our partners, BorderRAC also attended the County Commissioner Proclamation for National Injury Prevention Day (NIPD). BorderRAC also encouraged other hospitals and EMS agencies from our coalition to shine the green light.
