Community Programs and Events

Program/Event Details:
This free (virtual) workshop will include both aquatic managers and student lifeguards as panelists sharing their experiences of what it takes to become a lifeguard and what it is like to be a lifeguard.

Audience: High school students, parents, teachers, aquatic facilities, aquatic managers, public health professionals, media

Cost: Registration is FREE and is open to any King County High School Student who is at least 15 years old (or will be 15 years old by July 31, 2023).

Overview: Learn what it’s like to be a lifeguard & how you can grow your skills to become one! -- Hear from other teen lifeguards about their experiences -- Connect with local resources to help you become a lifeguard & find jobs within South Seattle & South King County -- After completing the workshop, free Lifeguard Training Classes will be available to a limited number of students who register.

There were 61 individuals who attended the workshop or signed up to learn more – we anticipate this number to grow via workshop recordings.

As of December 9, 2022: # registered to become lifeguards = 12 # registered in a lifeguard training class = 7 # waiting to turn15 years = 3

22 different schools were represented at the workshop, and 7 different schools have been represented so far in lifeguard registration. 58% of students who registered to become lifeguards expressed the desire to strengthen their swimming skills which will be supported.
