Dr. Tyra Bryant-Stephens is a board-certified pediatrician. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, as well as Attending Preceptor in Primary Care at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Dr. Stephens is the founder and medical director of the Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. CAPP was founded in 1997 and began its first project funded by the U.S. Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health. CAPP aimed to improve the health and well-being of asthmatics by providing free asthma classes in the community for parents and their children with asthma. In addition, lay home visitors provided education in the homes of asthmatic children where parents learned how to make environmental changes to their homes to improve their child’s asthma. CAPP has received tremendous positive feedback from families and class participants in West Philadelphia. In September 2001, CAPP received a 6 year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand its work into the North Philadelphia area.

The U.S. EPA, Office of Children’s Health Protection recently awarded CAPP the 2006 Children’s Environmental Health Excellence Award. CAPP was also chosen as a Top Model Asthma Program by the University of Michigan’s Asthma Health Outcomes Project.

Dr. Stephens is excited about using her experience in community based programming to enhance the work that IFCK has done in the past.
