Is your child’s playground the safest it can be? It’s easy to find out. As part of our Safe At Play initiative, the Play It Safe with Kohl's program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago provides free, onsite playground safety checks to schools, park districts, preschools and childcare centers interested in making their playgrounds safer for children. The on-site safety check, conducted by an injury prevention specialist who is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, lasts one to two hours. During the visit, the injury prevention specialist will identify potential safety hazards and discuss them with the appropriate personnel. Using a detailed checklist, the injury prevention specialist will inspect a number of aspects of each playground to ensure optimum safety. Some areas covered during a safety check include: condition and placement of the playground’s surface, equipment appropriateness, ongoing maintenance and supervision issues. The safety inspector will write up recommendations and send them to the school or park district. After receiving the recommendations, schools or parks will be able to modify existing playground equipment and establish an effective maintenance program, two key components in safe playgrounds.
