Earth Day Celebration: Healthy Child, Healthy Earth

Injury Free Coalition for Kids

Date: Tue, Apr 22, 2003
Time: 10:30am - 12pm

Location: Mitchell Elementary School, 56th St and Kingsessing Ave
Organizer/Sponsor: Mitchell Elementary School and Environmental Protection Agency

In honor of Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is donating $4000 to Mitchell Elementary School for the planting of trees on its campus. Mitchell Elementary School has been chosen to become one of the first 14 campus parks in Philadelphia. The Campus Park Initiative, brought to Philadelphia from Chicago by the new School District CEO Paul Vallas, aims to replace concrete and blacktop with grass and trees on School District campuses.

The money donated by the EPA will help purchase, plant, and maintain trees and shrubs in the "tree farm" area of the campus park. Check back to our site in the near future to see blueprints of the soon-to-be-built campus park and two playgrounds.

The Earth Day celebration at Mitchell Elementary School, named "Healthy Children, Healthy Earth", will see several children from the school read their essays on why they think there should be a playground at their school. Feel free to contact us to find out more information about the Earth Day celebration or the Mitchell Elementary School Campus Park and Playground Initiative.
