May is National Bicycle Safety Month and to commemorate that several community organizations are joining together to hold a bicycle derby at Shepard Rec Center on Saturday, May 3 from 10am - 1pm. Here is a list of the different events that will be taking place that day:
- Neighborhood Bike Works will perform no-charge bicycle safety checks and make minor adjustments.
- The first 150 children, 18 years old and under will be fitted with a free bicycle helmet by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health Injury Prevention Unit and SAFE KIDS Coalition for Southeastern Pennsylvania.
- Children will have the opportunity to practice safe riding skills on a skills course designed by Street Smarts and IFCK Philadelphia.
- Additional bicycle safety items will also be handed out.
- Representatives from other health and safety groups will be distributing valuable information to children and parents.
