Associate Director, Injury Free Coalition for Kids of
Alina M. Bueno, MPH is the Associate Director of the Childhood Injury Prevention Center of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Insitute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she has been employed since 1999. The Center is the Los Angeles site of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids®. Ms. Bueno earned both her undergraduate degree in Physiological Science and her Master degree in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Ms. Bueno has coordinated various health education programs in the community. As part of the Childhood Injury Prevention Center she has chaired the annual LA Child Safety Fair and coordinated the building of community playgrounds, free book distributions for children, and overseen the implementation of multiple safety programs for children and families of the South Bay and Harbor areas.
In 1998, Ms. Bueno developed a program called Shoot With Cameras -- Not Guns®. Through this program children express their thoughts and feelings about their community through photography. The photographs are used in class to discuss how the children can improve the world around them and are then presented in a community exhibit. The program has been implemented in multiple locations and has been replicated across the country.
Ms. Bueno has been involved in multiple community volunteer programs. Currently, she sits on the Board for both the National Management Association at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and for the Friends of Banning’s Landing in Wilmington, CA. As a board member for the Friends of Banning’s Landing she has chaired the grand opening of the center as well as three fundraising galas. In 2002, Ms. Bueno was selected by the Rotary International in the Los Angeles area to participate in a vocational and cultural Group Study Exchange program to Finland and Russia. She has received the California Governor’s “Call To Action” Award in Education (1998) and the UCLA Chancellor’s Service Award (1996).
