With the help of Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund, efforts have been made to reduce the numbers of injuries due to falls in the home in children under the age of two. The injury Free Coalition for Kids of New Haven and Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital have used the support of Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund to focus community education on window and stair safety. Resources have been allocated to research studying the cause of falls, as well as providing low-income families with children under the age of four with window guards, safety gates, and educational materials. The focus of this effort was targeted to a high-risk housing project in the New Haven area after two tragic incidents involving children falling from open windows. A collaborative partnership with the New Haven housing authority afforded us the ability to have the window guards and gates installed properly by the superintendent of the apartment building.
