The Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Hartford (Injury Free Hartford) serves the residents of Hartford and the Greater Hartford region. Injury Free Hartford is part of a national effort at Level I Trauma facilities to prevent and reduce intentional and unintentional injuries to children. Injury Free Hartford serves the community by providing safety and injury prevention information and activities in the following areas: pedestrian safety, bike helmet use, booster and car seats, home safety, fire safety, fall prevention, and other childhood injuries.
Our goal is to decrease childhood injury by altering the manner in which residents in City of Hartford neighborhoods think about and approach child safety.
Injury Free Hartford is engaged in the following community safety education and programmatic activities:
Support safe transport for all children. In partnership with our Safe Kids Connecticut program, we work to ensure all children in Hartford have safe and appropriate car seats through car seat clinics, parent and provider education, and free seats to families in need. We also support safe medical support through a medical car seat loaner program.
Provide pedestrian and bicyclist safety information to children and families. We offer free bicycle helmets and lights, helmet fittings, and helmet safety demonstrations at schools. We can also organize or support bicycle rodeos, walk audits, and other road safety initiatives.
Offer free home safety items to families in order to increase their use and prevent possible injury. These items include: cabinet locks, carbon monoxide alarms, doorknob covers, gun locks and safes, home safety kits, outlet covers, smoke detectors, toilet locks, water temperature duckies, window guards/stops.
Provide education to children and families on the prevention of childhood injury. We offer classes on safety at home, in the water, on the road, and in the car. We attend community events throughout the city
Support children's development at all stages of life: The North Hartford Ascend Pipeline is a cradle to career effort to ensure children living in the North Hartford Promise Zone – which includes the Clay Arsenal, Northeast, and Upper Albany neighborhoods – have the supports they need to reach their full potential. Connecticut Children’s received a five-year, $30 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Promise Neighborhoods Program to support the initiative, which officially launched in January 2022. Connecticut Children’s is now leading an impressive cross-sector team of early childhood experts, community leaders, community-based organizations and residents to identify community priorities and enhance the academic, health and life outcomes of North Hartford residents. Reduce the risk to teen drivers of having a fatal accident. Our staff are trained Impact Teen Driver representatives. We can provide teen driving safety seminars to Hartford schools. Additionally, our work to support the establishment of Connecticut's Graduated Driver Licensing law led to a reduction in teen driving deaths.
