The Promatores program trains Latino people to become lay health advisors in their neighborhoods. Through IFCK continuing efforts, the Promotores program director has added fire safety, child passenger safety, safe sleeping and other pediatric injury prevention topics to the curriculum. Mel has been invited to teach these segments here and in neighboring counties on a regular basis. We have built a relationship of trust with the Hispanic community, partly through regular attendance at the Migrant Network Coalition meeting, on whose Board MTW has served for the past year. This trust has led to invitations such as the opportunity to share injury prevention information with horse farm workers waiting to be seen at consular visits, and an opportunity to share information on car seats and fire prevention hosted by the local Spanish TV program. With the assistance of an interpreter, we have installed car seats and provided instruction in various areas of injury prevention as an outgrowth of this partnership.
